Elkridge, MD – September 2018

An evening in Washington, DC

In September 2018, I took another trip to the East Coast, this time flying into Baltimore for an audit in a suburb outside the city. The audit was scheduled for one week only. Two members of our team of three had never been to Washington DC, which was about an hour from the client we were auditing. One day in the middle of the week, we went to our audit site early, then left early for the day to hit up our nation’s capital that evening. The client was very helpful with recommendations for sites and dinner. We decided on the Capital Grill for dinner, just a block from the White House. The wait was going to be over an hour so we put our names down, and went for a walk. Indeed the White House was, in fact, a block away, as was the US Treasury! As it was mid week, there weren’t many crowds outside so we took our time and took lots of pictures.

After that, we still had about 45 minutes so decided to walk down to the Washington Monument. As we live on the West Coast, in Southern California, we were not accustomed to unpredictable weather patterns. Just as we made it to the Washington Monument, crossed the street, and snapped a couple of pictures, it started raining. Not just sprinkling, but pouring down rain. It went from no rain to pouring rain…there was no in between. There we were, standing at the traffic light, cars zooming past us, waiting for our turn to cross, getting drenched. We finally crossed but it was too late to even bother hurrying at that point. From the time we had just walked down this street until going back up, some vendors, who were not unfamiliar with the weather patterns of the East Coast, had set up booths and were selling raincoats and umbrellas. Obviously we bought that. We made it back to the restaurant and after a few minutes were seated. The restaurant has a lot of history to it and was quite handsome on the inside. Food was good too.

After we ate and were a little dry, we ventured out into the City. As it was evening, most places were closed. I had been to Washington DC when I was 10 so let the other two in the team, who had never been, decide what to see, and I just offered up suggestions. We visited the Capital Building and the Lincoln Memorial. Thank you Davis Farr for the opportunity.
