I love the social aspect of these types of audits, interacting with my clients. The really fun part comes with designing tests of operating effectiveness. This is legal “creative accounting”…
These are typically the government contractors. Some of them hire us to audit their indirect cost rate as required by their contract. For others we are hired by their cognizant agency. I travel to wherever they are headquartered.
My NPO clients are some of the hardest working people I know. They put in so much time and energy into raising funds for their organization. I enjoy hearing from them their passion for their cause.
I work for an audit firm located in beautiful Southern California. While the local firm I work for is small, with 2 other offices, one in Tacoma and one in San Diego, I get to travel the United States for work. I love seeing new places and meeting new people.
Whenever I travel someplace new, and even to a place I have been before, I research the area for what makes it unique. What is special about this place? I show up at my client with some ideas, then get suggestions from them. Every place I have been has something special and/or unique about it. My goal when I travel is to discover it. One of my travel rules is no eating at a chain restaurant, unless it is a regional chain that does not operate back home.
I am also a runner. I have completed a few marathons and countless half-marathons, 10k races, and 5k races. If my travel requires a weekend stay, I try to squeeze in a race. I have completed races in New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Kentucky when traveling for work. I love what I do because what I do allows me to do more of what I love.
